Well, already off to a bit of a rocky start with this thing. I forgot my camera at home yesterday and so had to shoot this with my camera phone. Not too bad but I’d definitely like to have this shot in higher quality. Alas.
Another rainy day in PDX yesterday. There were a couple of inches of very, very wet snow on the ground when I left for work in the morning but they melted away pretty quickly.
This is the holiday tree in Pioneer Court House Square (aka Portland’s Living Room). The Square’s previous incarnation was a parking lot. An anchor for downtown makes a lot more sense, doesn’t it? This is the same city that moved a freeway across the river in order to give downtown a front lawn (aka Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park).
The guy with the umbrella is a statue. It’s titled ‘Allow Me’. You can’t see from this angle, but he’s gesturing with his left hand, index finger outstretched, as if to say, ‘Allow me.’ It’s supposed to symbolise Portlanders helpful friendliness. We seem to have toughened up a bit since then: real Portlanders don’t use umbrellas.
