I wasn’t even sure that I would get a photo in today. The only time I was in any way inspired was while I was sitting on the bus between jobs and I always feel weird taking photos in crowded spaces, like I’m invading people’s privacy. (According to E. L. Doctrow in Ragtime, when when Jacob Riis was working on How the Other Half Lives and taking photographs of tenement life in New York City in the late 19th century, people were afraid that the camera would steal their souls. I mean, for what it’s worth and for as much as Doctrow can be counted on for historical accuracy.)

Anyway, it was a super-duper long day and I’m very happy it’s over. I didn’t sleep very well last night. I kept waking up and at one point I had a dream featuring the Gmork from The Neverending Story. It wasn’t exactly a nightmare but it wasn’t exactly a pleasant dream either.

After I finished up at the coffee shop, I headed over to the delicious taco place down the street. While waiting for my order, I read a little bit and then started playing with shutter settings and this candle. I ended up deleting most of the other shots I took. They weren’t very exciting, just longer and shorter shutter speeds. But that’s the great thing about digital photography: you can play all you want and not have to worry about how much it’s going to cost you to get the stuff developed and printed.

Oh, and this photo is actually cropped. I almost never crop my photos; I generally try to frame them just as I want them. Sometimes, though, it just makes sense.

Here’s hoping that I avoid any unsavoury dreams tonight.

Happy Friday to all of you people with ‘real’ jobs.
