The neighbourhood directly north of downtown Portland is known as the Pearl. It once was a run-down warehouse district. Over the past 15 years or so, it has been completely redeveloped into a Yuppie Wonderland. Don’t get me wrong, redevelopment is a good thing. And Yuppies are okay sometimes. And, yes, I kind of like the Pearl. I just wish that the old warehouses had been kept more in tact rather than entirely new construction.

This group of buildings sit on the Willamette River on the very northern edge of the Pearl, just south of the Fremont Bridge. Apparently they are due to be redeveloped soon under the name Centennial Mills. I couldn’t really find much information about the project but I hope it’s going to preserve these buildings rather than just tearing down these buildings and putting up new ones in their place.
